Your driver collects you inside Chan May port at the Internal Gate — a short 200-metre walk, no taxi scrum at the outer gate — and after roughly two guided hours in the citadel, the rest of the day is yours: lunch from our recommended list, then one royal tomb of your choice with a written guide kit in hand. Imperial City and tomb tickets are included; lunch is your own choice and your own bill. A flat US$39 deposit holds your date and is refunded automatically if your ship cannot dock — and you are back at the gate 75 minutes before all-aboard.
WHY THIS DAY WORKS ON A SHIP’S CLOCK
- Met inside the port, honestly stated. Many operators advertise “shipside pick-up” at Chan May — the port does not allow it. We say it as it is: your driver waits at the Internal Gate, about 200 metres from the ship.
- A deposit you get back. Many operators keep 20% deposits in full when plans change. Ours is a flat US$39 — refunded automatically if your ship cannot dock. Don’t port, don’t pay.
- Zero card fees — on the deposit and the balance alike. Many operators add 3.5–4.5% card surcharges. We add none: the US$39 deposit is fee-free, and on the day you choose — Vietnamese dong in cash, or a secure card link. Either way, the fee is ours, not yours.
- Never actually on your own. Your driver speaks working English, our hotline answers at any moment of the day, and your tomb comes with a written VLT guide kit — freedom with a safety line.

Every VLT cruise day carries a published shortening order, agreed before you sail in. On this route it is simple: if the morning runs late — a slow gangway, a long queue at the citadel — the royal tomb is the stop that shrinks or goes. The Imperial City stays, lunch stays, and the 13:45 departure from Hue stays. Nobody bargains with the drive back.
RAIN PLAN
October to December is Hue’s rain season. Umbrellas live in the car, the Imperial City’s long covered galleries make it the most rain-proof site in the city, and on wet days we simply run the sheltered stretches first. The schedule bends; the buffer does not.

Why put a guide at the Imperial City but not the tomb?
Because that is where a guide changes what you see. The citadel is a working history lesson — two hours with a licensed guide turns walls into stories. A royal tomb is a place to wander quietly at your own speed, and our written guide kit tells you what you are looking at without anyone hurrying you. You pay for expertise where it matters and keep your freedom where it doesn’t.
Which parts of the day are guided — and who looks after us in between?
Your licensed guide leads the Imperial City, roughly two hours, and says goodbye after. For the rest of the day you have an English-speaking driver who knows the route cold, a VLT hotline that answers at any moment, and the guide kit for your tomb. You are independent, not abandoned.
Is this manageable for guests who don’t walk far?
The Imperial City is flat but broad — expect a couple of easy kilometres at stroll pace, with benches and shade along the way. The tombs differ: Tu Duc is mostly level lakeside paths, Minh Mang is level but long, and Khai Dinh climbs 127 steps to its terrace. Choose your tomb by your knees, not the postcard — your guide will advise on the day.
How does lunch work?
It isn’t included, by design: cruise forums told us plainly that travellers would rather choose than be marched to a set menu. You pick from our shortlist of vetted Hue restaurants, your driver drops you at the door and collects you after, and you pay the restaurant directly. Local prices, your appetite, your clock.
Can we add Thien Mu Pagoda or a second tomb?
Ask us on WhatsApp before the day and we will tell you honestly whether your ship’s hours allow it. On the day itself it depends on the clock: if the morning runs early your driver may offer Thien Mu as a bonus on the way, but the 75-minute buffer is never traded for an extra stop.
What if it rains?
October to December is the wet season in Hue. Umbrellas are in the car, the Imperial City has long covered galleries, and we reorder the day to run sheltered stretches first. Rain changes the sequence, never the guarantee.
How do we pay?
A flat US$39 deposit holds your date, with no card fees. The balance is settled on the day, your choice of two ways: Vietnamese dong in cash, or a secure card payment link — no card fees either way; we absorb them. Prices are quoted in US dollars and converted at the published bank rate of the day. One practical note: there are no ATMs at Chan May port — if you prefer cash, your driver simply adds an ATM stop in Hue on the way.
What if our ship skips the port or docks late?
Ship can’t dock: deposit back automatically. Up to 90 minutes late: the published shortening order, no extra charge. Later: shortened day or full refund, your choice. Cancelling for your own reasons? Up to 24 hours before the day the deposit comes back too; inside 24 hours it is retained.
