HUE · PRIVATE HALF-DAY TOUR
Thuy Bieu Village Tour from Hue: Tiger Arena, Garden House Cooking Class
A private car and a licensed guide for the morning — the Nguyen dynasty’s tiger arena on the way, a pomelo garden house in Thuy Bieu, one easy loop through the village by bicycle, and a lunch you cook with the family.
Private car, hotel to hotel
Tiger Arena ticket included
Cycling: one flat village loop
Cook and eat with the family
This Thuy Bieu village tour from Hue travels by private car, not by bicycle — the riding is one gentle loop inside the village itself, on bikes the host family keeps at the house. Your guide collects you from your hotel in central Hue at 08:30 and stops first at Ho Quyen, the walled arena where the Nguyen emperors set elephants against tigers, and the only one of its kind still standing. Then on to Thuy Bieu, where a family in an old garden house shows you their thanh tra pomelo trees and what they make from the fruit. You ride the shaded lanes and the village market with your guide, come back for a herbal foot bath, cook lunch alongside your hosts and eat what you made. Tea and candied pomelo in the garden close the morning, and you are back at your hotel by about 14:00.
WHY THIS VILLAGE DAY AND HUE COOKING CLASS WORK
- The cycling is described honestly, before you book. Thuy Bieu is sold around Hue as a cycling tour, and how far you will ride tends to become clear on the day. We drive you there and back: the riding is one flat loop on village lanes, and you can sit it out in the garden without missing anything.
- A family home, not a hired kitchen. Many cooking classes in Hue run in a commercial kitchen with a hired chef. You cook in a garden house with the family who lives in it — descendants of a Nguyen court official.
- One price, everything mandatory inside it. Many day tours quote a low per-person figure and add the entrance ticket, the hotel pickup or the bicycle hire at the door. Ours carries all three, plus the guide, the foot bath, the class and the meal.
- Vegetarian means a whole menu. Tell us when you book and the family cooks a full vegetarian table, not one side dish beside everyone else’s lunch.
- You meet your guide before the day. Name, photo and WhatsApp number reach you 24 hours ahead, and the line stays open while you are out.
Times are our standard morning; we can shift the start by an hour or so if your day needs it.
YOUR DAY, HOUR BY HOUR
Collected from your hotel
Your guide and driver meet you in the lobby — no meeting point to find, no taxi to arrange. It is a short run out of the city along the river, and the guiding starts in the car.
Hotel pickup included
The tiger arena
A round wall of brick, an emperor’s terrace, five tiger cages facing one elephant gate. Built in 1830 and never restored, it is the only surviving arena of its kind — and it takes a guide to explain why a country would stage such a thing.
Ticket included
The garden house and its pomelo trees
The family who lives there welcomes you in, walks you through the thanh tra pomelo grove, and shows you what the fruit becomes: candied peel, tea, salad.
Family visit
One loop by bicycle
The family keeps bicycles for guests, so you ride from the door: a flat few kilometres of shaded lanes with your guide alongside, and a stop at the village market.
Bicycles included
Herbal foot bath, then the cooking class
A basin of warm water and garden herbs waits on the veranda — a Hue household remedy for legs that have been out in the sun. Then into the kitchen with your hosts, to cook three or four dishes yourself.
Vegetarian on request
Your lunch, then tea in the garden
You eat what you cooked, at the family table, at the pace of a family meal. Tea and candied pomelo in the garden close the morning, and the car has you back at your hotel by about 14:00.
Back by 14:00
IF THE DAY RUNS SLOW
Every Vietnam Legacy Tours day has a published shortening order, so nobody improvises at your expense. Here it is simple: the bicycle loop is the part that shrinks or goes. Ho Quyen stays, the garden stays, and the cooking class and the meal are never touched.
RAIN PLAN
Hue has a real rain season from October to December. Light rain changes nothing; heavy rain shortens or drops the bicycle loop, and the rest of the morning runs exactly as written, on the veranda and in the kitchen.

Frequently asked questions
What is Thuy Bieu village famous for?
Thanh tra pomelo, and the garden houses that grow it. Thuy Bieu sits in a bend of the Perfume River about seven kilometres upstream of Hue, and its sandy soil produces a pomelo the Nguyen court had sent to the palace. The village is still mostly gardens and lanes: fruit trees, low walls, a small market, and families who have farmed the same plots for generations.
How do you get to Thuy Bieu village from Hue?
It is roughly seven kilometres, twenty minutes by road, and there is no public transport worth the wait. Most visitors take a taxi, hire a bicycle for the river road, or come with a tour. On this day you travel by private car with your guide, which is what makes the village reachable for guests who would not want to cycle out and back in the heat.
What is Ho Quyen Tiger Arena?
A round, walled arena built in 1830 under Emperor Minh Mang, on the way out to Thuy Bieu. Inside are five tiger cages, a single elephant gate opposite, and a raised terrace where the emperor watched. It is the only purpose-built arena of its kind left standing anywhere, and it is quiet enough now that you can usually walk it alone.
Why did elephants fight tigers in Vietnam?
The elephant stood for the throne and the tiger for everything that threatened it, so the fight was a piece of political theatre with a required ending. The tigers were declawed and often tethered; the elephant was trained and armoured. Nobody in the audience expected suspense. Understanding that is the difference between seeing a ruin and seeing what it was for.
When was the last tiger–elephant fight in Hue?
1904, under Emperor Thanh Thai. The arena was abandoned after that and stood forgotten in the fields for most of a century. What remains is unrestored, and standing in the middle of it is a strange feeling — this is a place built for a single spectacle that has not happened in more than a hundred years.
What dishes will we cook?
Three or four Hue home dishes, and the family decides on the morning rather than in advance: what you cook follows what the market has that day and what the garden is giving. It is hands-on rather than a demonstration — you chop, wrap and grill alongside your hosts, pomelo from their own trees usually finds its way into one dish, and what you make is exactly what you sit down to eat. Tell us beforehand if anyone is vegetarian or cannot eat something and the family shops around it.
How long is the tour, and how much cycling is there?
Five and a half hours, from an 08:30 hotel pickup to about 14:00. The cycling is a slow, flat loop on quiet village lanes — a few kilometres at conversation pace, with your guide riding alongside. It is not the point of the day and it is not a workout; if you would rather stay in the garden with a cup of tea while the others ride, that is a perfectly normal choice.
Can the family cook a vegetarian version?
Yes, and it is a full menu rather than a plate of vegetables beside everyone else’s lunch. Tell us when you book so the family shops for it. The same goes for anything you cannot eat — write it in the booking form and it reaches the kitchen, not just the guide.
How do we pay, and what if we have to cancel?
A 30% deposit holds your date, with no card fees. The remaining 70% is settled after the tour: Vietnamese dong in cash at the published bank rate of the day, or a secure card link — we absorb the fees either way. Cancel up to 24 hours before and the deposit comes back in full; inside 24 hours it is retained, because by then the family has bought the food.
“I stopped selling this village as a cycling tour. The people who wanted it — parents, guests over fifty, anyone here in June — were never going to ride eight kilometres each way, and what stays with them was never the riding. It is the hour in the kitchen, and the tea in the garden afterwards. So the car does the distance, and the bicycles do one slow loop past the market.”
